Industry targeted

NewTrend Apparel Technology Center is targeting the apparel manufacturing industry which together with the textile industry is one of the largest industries in Macedonia . The elimination of import quotas by the World Trade Organization could severely impact the industry's ability to compete in the global market. At stake are around 22 000 jobs in the apparel manufacturing sector of Macedonia . The industry is responsible for approximately 362 million dollars ( US ), which represents 30% of the total value of exports from Macedonia .

Macedonian apparel industry uses very old-fashioned technology and methods of production. The introduction of high impact ICT applications will have a great effect by reducing production costs and reducing the response (lead) times, particularly in the area of pattern grading, marker making, spreading and cutting. The combination of technology and sales and marketing service offerings will help improve the overall competitive position of the apparel industry in the global market, particularly the EU.

Expected impact on employment in Macedonia in three years

The overall project is aimed at reducing the imminent decline in employment in the apparel manufacturing sector as a result of import quota elimination in January 2005. The use of ICT will help stabilize the industry by improving quality and shortening lead times.

Using the new TTC services, manufacturers are able to eliminate the current cutting facilities from their plants, thus freeing up space for more sewing capacity. The addition of rapid response production should expand the network of customers that will create more work for the apparel manufacturing companies, thereby increasing employment in the industry.

Opportunities for growth:

  • Full package service (FPS)
  • Own design and branding
  • Rapid response
